Nonionic collectors are simple hydrocarbon oils. Anionic and cationic collectors consist of a polar component that selectively attaches to mineral surfaces, and a non-polar component that projects out into the solution making the surface hydrophobic. Collectors can either chemically bond to the mineral surface with high selectivity (chemisorption) or be held on the surface by physical forces (physical absorption). Collector selection is critical for effective mineral separation via froth flotation.

TIRA manufactures customized anionic and cationic collectors for specific ore bodies and flotation process conditions primarily for the flotation of oxide ores such as phosphate and industrial minerals. Our wide range of technologies used for anionic and cationic collector formulation allow us to provide the best collector performance available. Let TIRA work with you to develop and implement a complete, customized flotation reagent package to help you succeed.

FROTHERS

The importance of frothers in mineral flotation is widely acknowledged in the mining industry. Frothers perform the following key functions in the froth flotation process:

Reduce surface tension of the liquid-gas interface to enable froth formation

Hinder coalescence in order to stabilize bubble size

Facilitate hydrophobic particle adhesion to air bubbles.

Frother chemicals are usually heteropolar surface-active organic surfactants with properly balanced hydrophile-lipophile properties, having branched hydrocarbon radicals and forming loosely packed gaseous films at the liquid/gas interface.

During the flotation process, frothers help create the ideal hydrodynamic conditions (such as bubble size and gas holdup) required within the pulp in the flotation cell. They generate froth that is stable enough to hold collected minerals on top of the pulp, mobile enough for removal, and decays quickly to assist with downstream operations. These characteristics play an important role in the kinetic viability of the flotation process as well as the overall grade and recovery that can be realized from the flotation cell or circuit.

TIRA tailor-made frothers are specially formulated blends to enhance the flotation process. They are engineered to optimize effectiveness in all types of flotation systems, especially in phosphate and other industrial mineral flotation.

pH MODIFIERS

Mineral conditioning and pH control can greatly affect flotation performance. Most mineral beneficiation processes require some type of pH adjustment to impart ideal separation conditions. As mineral feed quality continues to decrease, more sophisticated pH modifiers are needed to achieve optimum flotation performance. In many cases, the traditional commodity means of altering pH and the application of old chemistries do not provide the selectivity required to achieve modern mineral grade requirements. Commodity-type pH modifiers no longer deliver the best cost performance. A custom formulated pH modifier is needed to provide better froth structure and gangue selectivity for improved grade, and to create ideal conditions for increased recovery.

TIRA’s line of tailor-made pH modifiers increases the efficiency of the flotation process by facilitating optimum zeta potential and creating ideal conditions for collector function and mineral separation. They sequester soluble divalent ions which could potentially increase flotation collector usage and decrease collector efficiency, and they also help reduce the negative impact of water quality on reagent consumption. Our proprietary surfactants clean and prepare the mineral surface for efficient collector performance, and our pH modifiers selectively inhibit the interaction of gangue minerals with the flotation collector while promoting collector deposition upon the preferred mineral surface.

By precisely formulating our pH modifiers for your process we can achieve better migration of mineral-laden bubbles into the froth collection zone for a faster float, cleaner concentrate and higher mineral recovery.

DISPERSANTS

The mining industry faces many challenges, most notably lower quality reserves. With the decreasing quality of mined feed, more sophisticated techniques are needed to achieve industry required specifications. In many cases, the typical means of altering pH or applying different chemistries is not enough to offer the mineral selectivity needed to achieve required recovery and grade goals in flotation. Depressants are often used to increase the efficiency of the flotation process by selectively inhibiting the interaction of one mineral with the collector, for example, the depression of quartzite to allow for more optimal apatite/collector interaction, thus improving final recovery and grade.

TIRA’s flotation depressants have been custom developed for a variety of applications. They help depress gangue minerals while increasing recovery and selectivity without sacrificing grade. Our depressants have been especially effective in phosphate, silica / glass sand and iron beneficiation.

SLURRY PUMPING AIDS

Pumping mineral slurries over long distances can be very costly as a result of the energy required to move the slurry or dilution to minimize energy requirements. Slurry pumping aids such as dispersant viscosity modifiers or rheology modifiers work to reduce the rheological properties of the slurry, while allowing for increased slurry solids to be transferred over greater distances. A good example of this can be found in the transfer of phosphate concentrate to the phosphoric acid chemical plant which can be hundreds of miles away.

Rheology modifiers also assist in preventing or reducing the cementation process which can occur in the slurry pipeline due to downtime in the transportation process. A rheology modifier will allow for the slurry to redisperse upon restarting the plant, instead of cementing or compacting at the bottom of the pipeline.

Some minerals require a stable dispersion for transportation in drums as they are shipped across the world. If shipped in the absence of a dispersant viscosity modifier or rheology modifier, the drums will also develop some level of cementation.

TIRA custom formulates dispersants, viscosity modifiers and rheology modifiers for specific ore types to optimize the slurry pumping process. Let us help you select, and plant test the best slurry pumping aid for your process. We will work closely with you to ensure a successful outcome for your project.

DEFOAMERS

A mining and mineral processing defoamer or anti-foaming agent is a chemical additive that can prevent, reduce, and break or remove foam and entrained gases in slurry handling equipment. It is used to slow or prevent the formation of foam, and also to break or manage foam that has already formed in mineral handling systems, especially when the foam is causing processing problems. Slowing or eliminating the formation of foam in mineral process liquids improves operational efficiency. In the mining and mineral processing fields, the terms defoamer and anti-foaming agent are frequently used interchangeably.

In mineral processes, too much foam can cause mineral losses as storage vessels foam over and equipment fills with foam, causing operational bottlenecks and slowing down mineral collection rates. Mineral processes typically encounter three types of foam challenges:

Dissolved air in the aqueous phase

Entrained air bubbles that are small enough and stable enough to be suspended in the slurry media

Bubbles that have sufficient buoyancy and stability to rise to the surface and collect on top of the mineral slurry as foam.

Mining and mineral processing defoamers or anti-foaming agents can be specially formulated to comprehensively and simultaneously handle each of these challenges.

Many mineral defoamers are insoluble in the foaming mineral slurry and are designed to have surface active characteristics specific to the nature of the foam, minerals and aqueous ions. A mining defoamer must act rapidly to spread across often viscous mineral foam and surfaces, breaking bubbles and foam by changing the surface tension between minerals in the aqueous phase. It attacks and interferes at the air-liquid surface where it destabilizes the foam structure or lamellae, creating a collapse or rupture of the entrained air bubbles and breaking down the surface foam. Entrained air bubbles are agglomerated into larger bubbles that buoyantly rise to the surface through the bulk mineral slurry, bursting other entrained air structures on the way up.

At the surface level of thickeners, pump boxes and other process equipment, low viscosity defoamers can spread across the surface area of the foam, bursting bubbles as the media is gently mixed to effectively remove surface foam. Eliminating these types of surface foam can reduce processing losses and help equipment run more efficiently.

In mining applications, defoamers can be enhanced by customizing the defoamer and dosing system to the application. The dosing and application of the defoamer is key to its success and a reliable and robust defoamer system is needed. In most mining scenarios, partnering with a company that custom formulates defoamers and designs dosing systems is the best approach to solve foam issues during mineral processing.

A variety of foam control agents are available to prevent the formation of foam for specific ores, mineral handling equipment, launders, and mineral pumping and flotation process conditions to aid in the handling of phosphate and industrial minerals. Lab screening of formulas and then plant testing enables the selection of the best formula for your operation. Onsite testing and process consultation can further increase value.

TIRA formulates and manufactures customized defoamers for specific ore bodies, equipment types, and flotation process conditions to beneficiate oxide ores such as phosphate and industrial minerals. Let TIRA work with you to develop and implement a customized defoamer and dosing system to help you succeed.

FLOCCULANTS

Flocculants are used in the mining industry to treat the water used in mineral extraction and flotation processes. They help aggregate fine suspended particles to form larger flocs so that the solids can more easily be separated from the water. Flocculants are used to clean flotation process water to reduce reagent consumption and improve recovery. They are also employed to treat discharge water so that stringent environmental standards can be met.

TIRA offers a wide range of flocculants to optimize performance for a variety of applications. Our TiraCare line of products includes:

Water Clarification Aids – polymers used at mines to clean muddy water to allow for recycling and/or environmentally acceptable clean water discharge

Clay Settling Aids – polymers that enable dispersed clay to consolidate faster, allowing clean water to be recycled back to flotation plants

Phosphate Rock Slurry Thickening Aids – polymers used to increase phosphate rock slurry concentrate grade prior to use in the phosphoric acid reactor.

TIRA’s technical experts will work closely with you to select the best flocculant for your application. In addition, we can provide polymer make-down, feed and metering equipment when required. Dispersants and coagulants are also available to meet your specific needs.

DEWATERING/FILTER AIDS

Mine dewatering / filter aids are specially formulated surface-active agents that help reduce the moisture content of mineral concentrates during filtration and subsequent storage applications. These products normally reduce the surface tension of water so that water is easily removed from mineral surfaces during filtration and storage. Dewatering / filter aids are widely used in all wet mineral processing applications where improving moisture content of filtered cakes is desired. Application areas include both sulfide and non-sulfide minerals processing and as well as coal cleaning.

Dewatering / filter aid dosage requirements vary widely based on the application. Dewatering / filter aids can be applied neat or in diluted form and points of application in the process must be carefully selected. It can be added to spray water applications onto filter cakes during filtration so that filter wash efficiency is improved or added directly into the mineral or concentrate slurries going to filtering processes and even to centrifuging.

TIRA offers various mine dewatering / filter aids for different dewatering applications. Our filter aids improve mineral concentrate filtration for better filtration efficiency, and our dewatering aids reduce the moisture content of mineral concentrates resulting in improved drying of concentrate for storage and transportation. These products also improve water recovery and water efficiency in wet mineral processing applications.

TIRA’s expert field personnel are available to our customers’ engineers, production managers and operations personnel as process advisors for dewatering applications. In a typical wet-process phosphoric acid process, phosphate rock is reacted with sulfuric acid in large digesters or reactors. In addition to the calcium phosphate in the ore being converted to phosphoric acid (P2O5) and calcium sulfate (gypsum), there are numerous side reactions due to impurities in the rock.

Carbon dioxide (CO2) content in the rock is a major contributor to foam and gas generation in the reactor. Significant foam presence on the liquid surface can lead to fugitive emissions from the reactor, overflows during start-up or upset conditions, and P2O5 loss to the exhaust gas scrubbing system. The entrained gases diminish the pumping efficiency of the system, and the foam itself takes up valuable head space in the reactors, effectively reducing production capacity. Both problems wreak havoc on the designed process parameters of the system which can result in more rapid scale formation in piping and plugging of filter media, both of which can lead to more shutdowns. When excess entrained gas and foam cause problems with sulfate control in the reaction due to poor circulation, there can also be losses of the valuable P2O5, partly due to poor gypsum crystal formation which reduces acid filtration rates.

When certain impurities are present in the phosphate rock, either organic or inorganic, they act as surfactants and tend to stabilize the gases that are released in the rock / sulfuric acid reaction, making surface foam more stable and difficult to control, and limiting the ability of the gases to disengage from the reactor slurry. When the resulting gases are entrained in the slurry, they decrease agitation and circulation by lowering pumping and mixing efficiencies, and ultimately result in lower raw material recoveries due to P2O5 carryover into flash coolers and evaporators. More detailed technical information on these mechanisms is available in a paper entitled When Nameplate Is Not Enough—Expanding Phos Acid Capacity with Defoamers. Contact us to request a copy of this paper.

One of the major challenges that phosphoric acid producers face in achieving desired plant production rates and efficiencies is identifying the optimal means of removing such gases that are liberated during these production processes. Mechanical equipment can be added to plants for this purpose but is capital intensive to install, equally expensive to maintain and provides only a partial solution at best. Process chemical additives such as defoamers have become the universally accepted “best practice” alternative for accelerating the removal of unwanted gases and improving plant performance.

The addition of a defoamer during phosphoric acid production can facilitate higher capacity utilization and optimal output of finished product. An ideal phosphoric acid defoamer not only has the ability to “knock down” surface foam in the digester but also to reduce entrained CO2 gas bubbles in the slurry. Design and choice of an appropriate defoamer requires an understanding of the characteristics of the phosphate rock, the particular type of phosphoric acid production processes and the intended operating parameters.

DUST CONTROL COATING

Dry fertilizers are inherently dusty products. During fertilizer production, storage, transport and use there is often significant generation of dust as particles degrade. Handling and application equipment can cause breakage, while temperature and humidity swings can cause a loss of granule integrity even while fertilizer is in storage. In some cases, imperfect production processes can result in overly fragile fertilizer which tends to partially deteriorate into dust at any given stage in the fertilizer process.

Not only is there a loss of valuable product as dust drifts away from its intended location, but dust also creates significant air quality issues. To combat this problem, dust control coatings have long been applied to fertilizers at various stages between production and application.

Appropriate fertilizer dust control coatings must:

Provide robust, long-lasting dust control

Be relatively easy to apply to dry fertilizer in a typical operation

Have minimal impact on the flowability of the treated fertilizer

Be made of ingredients suitable for safe use in the facilities where they are applied as well as for all downstream uses and applications including agriculture

Not undermine the treated fertilizer’s ability to comply with applicable regulatory requirements

Enhance the treated fertilizer’s marketability

Be economical.

TIRA offers a broad range of fertilizer dust control coatings in its TiraTreat & TiraCare product lines which meet all of the requirements identified above. Coatings in these lines can contribute additional benefits to the fertilizer of caking control and/or coloration. TiraTreat and TiraCare product lines can help fertilizer producers and those that handle fertilizer meet their environmental, health and safety goals. When a supplier can go to market with an appropriately treated fertilizer product, they will realize the full market value for their product while minimizing the potential for quality claims. TIRA will help you select the best product for dust control coating and design an optimal coating application system to meet your fertilizer dust control needs.

ANTICAKING AGENTS

Caking or clumping is a significant concern in dry fertilizer production, storage, transport and application. Crystallization of water-soluble salts and the resulting bridges between the surfaces of fertilizer particles is a common mechanism that causes caking. Pressure from storage conditions can also cause the surface of fertilizer particles to experience plastic deformation, causing their new contact surfaces to experience adhesion from reduced water vapor pressure.

Regardless of the cause, fertilizer caking can be highly problematic. Fertilizers are often stored in open bins in very large bulk quantities and caked product can cause portions of the pile to form unstable “cliffs” of material. Such “cliffs” can be extremely hazardous for operators of mobile equipment digging into the base of a pile since those higher, caked sections of the pile can become dislodged and tumble down like an avalanche. Caked fertilizer in bulk transport equipment can also be difficult to load and unload. It can cause improper distribution in blending or other compounding operations and can damage handling equipment. And when fertilizer is not free flowing, there will be uneven distribution during field application. All of these situations can diminish and sometimes even destroy the value of fertilizer, and in some cases, create safety hazards for workers in the industry.

Conditioning treatments for fertilizers may be used to interrupt these caking tendencies, thereby enhancing the product’s value and handling safety. Fertilizer producers can apply an external treatment of an anti-caking agent which contains appropriate surface active agents to disrupt typical fertilizer caking mechanisms. These coatings are usually formulated with other components that reduce the formation of dust, excessive amounts of which can promote crystal bridging which also contributes to caking.

Appropriate fertilizer anti-caking agents should:

Provide robust, long-lasting caking control

Be relatively easy to apply to dry fertilizer in a typical operation

Be made of ingredients suitable for safe use in the facilities where they are applied as well as for all downstream uses and applications including agriculture

Not undermine the treated fertilizer’s ability to comply with applicable regulatory requirements

Enhance the treated fertilizer’s marketability

Be economical.

When producers treat their fertilizer adequately with a high-quality anti-caking agent which meets these requirements, such as those in TIRA’s product lines, they can be comfortable knowing that they’ve properly addressed fertilizer caking-related safety concerns in their workplace as well as in downstream handling facilities. And when a supplier is able to go to market with an appropriately treated fertilizer product, they will realize the full market value for their product while minimizing the potential for quality claims. TIRA will help you select the best anti-caking agent and design an optimal coating application system to meet you fertilizer anti-caking needs.

COLORING AGENTS

Today there is increasing demand for granular fertilizers which have a favorable appearance. One of the more obvious appearance differentiators is color, and so fertilizer producers need solutions to impart the desired colorations the market demands for their products.

TIRA has developed a broad range of coloring agents based on dyes and/or pigments to treat the entire fertilizer granule from the inside out, including color coatings which can further modify the color, sheen and translucency of the granule surface as desired. In addition, TIRA’s coating agents, which also contribute dust control and caking control, can be customized to impart color to the surface of the substrate. Our research scientists, with the help of our field technicians, can diagnose and prescribe the appropriate colorant, coating agent or, in some cases, a combination or package of multiple coloring agents to achieve the desired result for our customers.

TIRA also designs and installs optimal application systems for our coloring agents. These application systems can be designed to include colorimeters to detect subtle changes in shade and intensity of the colored fertilizer and to synchronize these detection devices to dosing controls in order to maintain consistent adherence to color specifications.

Our TiraFloc line of products includes:

Water Clarification Aids – polymers used at mines to clean muddy water to allow for recycling and/or environmentally acceptable clean water discharge

Clay Settling Aids – polymers that enable dispersed clay to consolidate faster, allowing clean water to be recycled back to flotation plants

Phosphate Rock Slurry Thickening Aids – polymers used to increase phosphate rock slurry concentrate grade prior to use in the phosphoric acid reactor.

TIRA’s technical experts will work closely with you to select the best flocculant for your application. The settling rate of solid particles in the phosphoric acid clarification area closely follow theoretical laws and is often not fast enough to maintain optimum production rates in fertilizer plants or other downstream applications. In order to maximize plant efficiency, polymers such as TIRA clarification aids are added to accelerate settling time.

TIRA’s polymeric clarification aids are tailor-made to significantly reduce the amount of time required to remove impurities from phosphoric acid once it leaves the production process. For temporary arrangement the Metering Pump suction can be directly inserted into the Drum to suck the Granulating Aid and pump it to the Granulator. After collecting the initial data start dosing the Granulating Aid as per the recommended dosage. The dosage of the Granulating Aid should be at the feed end of the Granulator. Preferably if it can be added along with the water of granulation, it will be better as it can easily blend with the ingredients of the Granulator well. For process plant also it can be added along with the water inlet or can be sprayed inside the granulator using compressed air. The application of the Granulating Aid should be such that maximum coverage of the ingredients inside the Granulator should take place. After the dosing of Granulating Aid is started start collecting the samples for analysis after a minimum of 4 hours. During this time the entire mass of fertilizer in the system including the recycled material will be mixed with the Granulating Aid and from 5th Hour the results can be indicative. A 3-day trial on round the clock basis will give a clear picture on the overall benefits achieved by using Granulating Aid in the plant.

3. Their narrow molecular weight distributions provide optimum dispersion efficiency, translating into maximum performance at the lowest possible formulation cost.

APPLICATIONS

TIRA Care dispersants are used in the paint industry to achieve the highest possible loading of fillers and pigments in the grind phase. Higher loadings allow finer grinds that in turn improve the hiding power of the paint so as to extract the maximum value from the pigments.

TIRA Care dispersants are surface-active ingredients, which ease the incorporation of pigments and fillers into a liquid. Agglomerates are broken up by shearing whereby new surfaces are created. They are wetted by dispersing agents which stabilize the aggregates of pigments or fillers. Calcium carbonate must usually be ground to a particular particle size in a process greatly benefited by the use of a dispersant. Calcium carbonate is widely used in the paint industry and in paper production. Many other inorganic (and organic) minerals and pigments are also dispersed into water-based slurries for a variety of applications.

Low molecular weight TiraCare structures with anionic groups are used in highly filled inorganic pigment or filler pastes due to strong viscosity reduction, but can be used for organic pigments as well. Amphiphilic structures with high molecular weight have to be used in higher concentrations calculated on pigment in comparison to those discussed above.

They are always recommended for pastes with requirements for long-term stability. Especially for expensive organic pigments this structure principle is technically and economically beneficial. Even titanium dioxide as high-density material can be stabilized without significant settlement for several months.

BENEFITS:

Higher loading of pigments and fillers

Increased coloration or hiding power

Reduction of specks

Excellent dilution behavior

No settlement dispersing of TiO2

BINDERS:

The binder is one of the most important components of a paint, as it is the film-forming component. Paint consists of 4 main ingredients: Pigments, Charges, Solvent and Binder.

Diluents, additives (dispersants, defoamers, driers, corrosion inhibitors…) and colorants can also be part of a paint formulation, but they are optional.

Pigment and charges are providing color, optical and physical properties to the finished paints, but are in general insoluble in the solvent. In this context, binder is playing the key role of holding the pigment and make it adheres onto a surface.

The binder must have the necessary physical properties for the intended purpose. These physical properties include flexibility, hardness, abrasion resistance, water resistance, gloss, stain resistance, bio resistance, washability, ultraviolet light stability, and chemical resistance. The end application (interior paints, exterior paints, floor coatings…) and the atmosphere to which the paint will be exposed (industrial area, countryside, seaside…) is determining the required properties that binder have to bring to the formulation.

TIRA is proposing a wide range of binders under the TiraCare brand. They are acrylic latexes used in applications such as interior or exterior paints, high PVC paints, semi-gloss and high gloss architectural coatings, sealants, adhesives and elastomeric coatings.

APPLICATIONS

Interior & Exterior Paints

Textured Finishes

Architectural Applications

Plasters

Roof Coatings, Flexible Coatings

Primers for Mineral Substrates

Silk paints, Semi-Gloss Paints and Full Glossy Paints

6. Generally, the viewing ports or peep holes available are sufficient for injection. Immediately the water evaporates, and the Magnesium/Ammonium Nitrates decompose into magnesium oxide and oxides of nitrogen.

Magnesium oxide prevents the formation of low melting point vanadate’s, sulfates and silicates by forming magnesium derivatives which have a high melting point. MgO deposits on the heat transfer surfaces forming a protective grey coating which inhibits the adhesion of deposits on the heat transfer surfaces.

Oxides of nitrogen are powerful oxidizing agents to convert unburnt carbon to carbon monoxide

WATER TREATMENT CHEMICALS

TIRE having a complete series of water treatment programs for Boilers and Cooling Systems which conform to the British standard Code of practice for the treatment of water systems.

A continual theme stressed in this water treatment programs is the importance of careful monitoring of the treatment program during its implementation.
